Copper Prices Soaring Again
category: IndustryNews | Thursday, January 14, 2010
After more than doubling in 2009 (the largest single-year commodity cost increase since 1973), copper prices hit a 16 month high at the start 2010 driven by supply concerns, a weakened dollar, and expectations of a strengthening global economy.
"[The world supply surplus generated during the global recession] is expected to shrink substantially in 2010 as economic recovery strengthens? A supply deficit for refined copper is widely expected to re-emerge from 2011 onward." - Financial Times, January 5, 2010.
" 'You have a recipe for higher prices -- the weaker dollar, expectations China will buy (next year) and potential strikes in Chile,' said Alex Heath, head of base metals at RBC Capital Markets." - Reuters.com
